1. Matters Arising From Previous Meetings

1.1

Following the receipt of the letter from Mr Hanson informing us that the Highland Council own the area between the Kings Arms and the Castle Moil down to the Mean High Water Spring Line, the Secretary wrote to the Highland Council asking if they will fund sea defences but has received no reply. He was asked to write again to John Macdonald suggesting the possibility of a joint project with Scottish Water when they install a new pipe along the foreshore. He was also asked to write to North British Trust the owners of the Kings Arms Hotel.

Mr Robertson and Mr Sikorski have carried out this year’s shoreline survey the results are as follows, however they pointed out that the situation is in fact worse than the figures indicate as in several areas the shore has been undercut and only 20-30 cm thickness of turf remains.

Marker obliterated by new car park.

We have received a quotation from Roddie Morrison of £2095 + VAT for replacing the six windows of the Old School. The Secretary was asked to write to the Highland Council and see if a grant was available.

1.3

The secretary wrote again to Alistair Thomson regarding the foul smell from the drains in Old Kyle Farm Road at the end near the roundabout he carried out an investigation and could find no problem, however he will discuss the matter with Scottish Water.

Mr Robertson and Mr Sikorski have investigated the best way to provide the lighting of the War Memorial and it was decided in conjunction with Marshall Gillespie that we would provide a concrete platform at each corner of the plinth and the Highland Council would fit four new cages. Marshall Gillespie would be providing a cage this week to enable us to size the platform and would also arrange for the electricity to be turned of.

1.4

We have made contact with Dorothy Maxwell who has agreed to print the information sheet for the board next to the pontoon and Mr Glenwright has sent her the details.

Mrs Suzanne Arnold is the new Chairman of the Eilean Bàn Trust.

1.5

The Secretary has written to the Harbour Master requesting that the mooring lying in front of the old ferry office be put back in position, but has received no reply. He was asked to write directly to the Highland Council and also to ask them to have the rusty vessel moored in front of the shop removed.

The Secretary wrote to Bill Ross regarding white lining and landscaping of the car park. He replied saying it was sometimes difficult to get lining contractors to come to Skye. He hopes to purchase new white lining equipment, which will allow local road workers to carry out short lengths of lining. However he is considering signing the car park to aid traffic movements. The Secretary was asked to write to Bill Ross and invite him to visit the car park in person so we can discuss our complaints.

1.6

The Secretary wrote to Alaisdair MacKenzie, Area Solicitor, expressing our concerns at the tendering process used for the sale of the old “Calmac” building at the end of the pier. He replied saying he had passed our letter to John Clarke, Head of Property as it was his department which handled the marketing and sale of the building. He had since spoken with his department and had been told that the decision not to re-advertise the building with the condition “to provide a public toilet” removed had been taken by the Area Committee on the grounds of cost. Mr Sikorski said that a solicitor had told him that the matter should be reported to the Audit Commission and the Council agreed to do this.

The Secretary wrote to John Macdonald to claim this years Village Officer funding who had passed our letter onto Bill Ross. He had acknowledged receipt of the letter and will be in touch with us again once he has all the information to hand.

1.7

The Secretary wrote to ask Bill Ross regarding the battered “Kyleakin” sign pointing down to the village at the roundabout. He replied it was still legible and with limited funding he was unable to fund a replacement. However he had copied the letter to the Planning and Development Service as they have been able to assist with ‘gateway’ type signs in the past.

3.1

There is a large pothole in the road outside the Old School and there was another one on the bend of the road in South Obbe, The Secretary was asked to write to Bill Ross and ask for them to be repaired on an urgent basis.

We agreed to donate £150 to this year’s Kyleakin Gala.

3.2

There is a sign on the Haakon Bar saying that the toilets are not open until 12.00 on Saturdays and Sundays we understood that it had been agreed with the Highland Council it would be 10.00 a.m., the Secretary was asked to write to Bill Ross to find out what had been agreed and pointing out the problems with the 12.00 opening time.

The Secretary has written to Bill Ross regarding the damaged bus shelter opposite the Castle Moil Restaurant and the matter is being dealt with.

3.3

The Secretary has written to Bill Ross regarding the abandoned blue Sierra in the harbour area who replied saying it was being dealt with following the Highland Council’s “abandoned vehicles procedure”. Mr Sikorski said he had phoned Portree police station four times regarding the old tow truck behind the hostel but they appeared to have no record of his calls. The Secretary said if he provided times and details of the calls he would write a formal letter.

The Secretary had been approached by Bill Fulton and a local resident and asked to get the Village Officer to weed along the bottom of the fences on the path between Olaf and Achmore Roads. The meeting agreed it was not our responsibility to tidy up outside people’s houses.
