The new village hall project, which
opened late summer 2002 is available to locals for a variety of uses. The main hall is big
enough for racquet sports and 3 bowling carpets, as well as being easily converted
to house up to 250 seats and a stage for music and theatre productions.
Calum McPherson of Skye And Lochalsh Enterprise said "Since the opening of the bridge in 1995 there has been considerable effort in Kyleakin to counter the effects of bypassing. The new hall project will underpin this effort by ensuring a sustainable and economically active community for many years to come."
Because of the potential positive impact the hall will have on the local community, the proposals proved strong enough to attract funding from a variety of sources including the National Lotteies Charity Board, The Highland Council and the Gannochy Trust. SALE has awarded a £40,000 Community Action Grant to the project.
Off the main hall there is a committee room which can be partitioned, dressing rooms, full kitchen and toilet facilities and ample storage. The hall has been designed to help achieve good acoustics and to be energy efficient as well as having full disabled access throughout.
Kyleakin Community Hall Committee, a group set up in 1997 to raise funds for the hall, have raised and contributed £56,900 towards the total costs of £638,930.
