The pontoon in Kyleakin harbour to which 24 yachts and small boats were moored broke away yesterday as gale force winds battered the west coast of Scotland.

At Kyleakin coastguards, the harbourmaster and lifeboat crews mounted a rescue operation for a pontoon after one of its anchor-chains had apparently broken.  Last night Alaisdair Mackenzie, of Portree RNLI lifeboat, said the pontoon was left secured by just one anchor and it threatened to break free entirely in winds gusting at speeds of up to 50mph.

He added: “If the pontoon had broken free, considerable damage would have been caused to the yachts and other boats moored on it.”

In an operation which also involved Kyle RNLI inshore lifeboat two people were ferried to a tug moored opposite the pontoon. A rope was transferred to the tug and the pontoon was moved into its original position and secured.

Divers were expected at the harbour last night to replace the broken anchor.
